We travel through our working lives and suddenly we realize that the Interstate Highway of Jobs and Careers is coming near to an end. The fast journey we've been on now takes us closer to our destination. Regardless of what we intended, we are faced with the fact that we are going to have to choose an exit ramp that takes us on the right path to conclude our short time here on earth.
Don't get me wrong here – this is not a sad note. On the contrary, this is EXCITING. You see, after all this time in our journey, there are still amazing and exciting roads ahead. For some, it came too soon. For others, we found detours and objects in our paths that we either navigated around or we found ourselves nearly stopped from reaching our intended destination.
Here's the great news, if you are reading this, then choices probably still remain to find some great destinations ahead. I have one exit ramp that I'm preparing to take that I hope you'll find as exciting as I do. But before I share more about this exciting exit ramp, let me first tell you a quick story about my recent flights between Chicago and Austin and how I felt “destiny” (not “coincidence”) played a role in confirming my choice of exit ramps toward retirement.
The short part of this story is that I sat in seat 26D when flying from Chicago to Austin and again when returning to Chicago 4 days later. I met a really nice couple on the trip down to Austin. When I boarded my return trip, imagine my surprise when I saw that same couple in those same seats next to me for the return trip. We laughed, reintroduced ourselves, and enjoyed the “coincidence” that we had chosen the same flights/seats and dates to fly. They were middle aged “young” and beautiful people. I wish I knew them better.
Now to the heart of the story. You see, I was on the plane after attending one of the best conferences in my career. It was exciting and motivating. Also, we were challenged to “take action” in our lives and not let fear stop us from helping others. That's right, we didn't leave with the intention of doing something for ourselves, but learned that giving what we had learned had great possibilities for everyone we touched. We were challenged to not be selfish and not hold back sharing the amazing future I saw as a result of dedicated and unselfish leaders of this conference.
So picture this. I'm setting with this wonderful couple, knowing my life had changed for the better from this conference. I asked a few simple questions about their journey, jobs, home etc. They had great jobs I'm sure they were being successful in. I told the guy I thought he was probably the luckiest guy in the world for traveling with such a beautiful lady sitting next to him and he smiled and turned to her and acknowledged this and we all greatly enjoyed the moment. That totally broke the ice.
At that point, I stepped way out of my comfort zone and simply asked, “When you are my age, do you think you'll still be doing what you are doing now – working for XYZ Company?” He thought probably so with some promotions over the years, but she also added they had considered opening their own business and described a very novel idea they had given some thought to. I truly hoped I had planted a seed for them to pursue their dreams as soon as possible.
When they asked about the conference this weekend, I told them about how it provided great training and motivation for people who want to start and grow small businesses. (At least I hope I said something like that with coherent sentences.) We chatted briefly and later I asked them if they would like my contact info. They did. I encouraged them that if they would like to learn more about something that could positively affect their future, they contact me.
The exit ramp that I choose now is to continue to build my own business. I choose to step out of my “not good enough” pattern and share with others any value I can bring to them.
Choose your exit ramp with one that will move you toward your dreams and a prosperous future. If you give me the privilege, I'll share more with you about options I have found.
I am blessed,
